  10. The first communist state was the USSR after
  11. the revolution of 1917. Revolutionary
  12. socialist parties and groups united to form
  13. communist parties in other countries during
  14. the interwar years. After World War II,
  15. communism was enforced in those countries
  16. that came under Soviet occupation. China
  17. emerged after 1961 as a rival to the USSR in
  18. world communist leadership, and other
  19. countries attempted to adapt communism to
  20. their own needs.
